About the position
The Fire Control Worker position involves performing various skilled labor tasks to support fire suppression efforts, including brush removal, maintenance of fire facilities, and responding to emergency calls. Workers will operate hand and power tools, maintain fire department equipment, and participate in physical fitness programs. This role is essential for protecting life and property during fire incidents and may involve working in hazardous conditions.
Responsibilities
- Cut and remove brush from roadsides, fire roads, and fuel breaks using hand and power tools.
- Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties at fire facilities.
- Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property.
- Perform maintenance work on fire department facilities including landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
- Operate vehicles and specialized equipment as a Fire Equipment Operator's aide.
- Participate in flood control activities such as trenching and sandbagging.
- Maintain fire department equipment and perform minor vehicle service and repair.
- Participate in the department's physical fitness program.
Requirements
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
- Any combination of experience and/or training demonstrating the ability to operate hand and power tools safely and perform maintenance tasks.
Nice-to-haves
- One season or more of wildland fire suppression experience, either paid or volunteer with a fire agency.
- Experience in construction, vehicle maintenance, or building maintenance.
