About the position

The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for independently implementing projects and programs within the City of Providence's Public Works Department. This role involves assisting the Chief Engineer and Deputy Chief Engineers in planning, organizing, directing, and supervising a wide range of engineering projects, including traffic, sewer, storm drainage, flood management, and road maintenance. The position requires significant decision-making authority and oversight of engineering operations, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, supervises, and reviews work of staff in the Engineering Division.
  • Performs complex design, analytical, and managerial work for various city projects.
  • Prepares requests for proposals, bid specifications, and reviews bids for compliance.
  • Coordinates and manages projects, integrating technical activities to achieve goals.
  • Analyzes technology and resource needs to assess project feasibility.
  • Provides technical insights and support to the Chief and Deputy Chief.
  • Supervises engineering projects during planning, design, and construction stages.
  • Coordinates with utility companies and public/private entities on city projects.
  • Supervises staff working on public road projects, including permitting and inspections.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering curriculum approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in a responsible capacity, including two years of supervising large scale projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques in large scale engineering projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large professional engineering operations.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a registered professional engineer in Rhode Island.
  • Experience with municipal procurement and program management.
