Direct Care Specialist - Part-time ID- 11165

The Juvenile Direct Care Specialist (DCS) is a professional person appointed to provide residential program services for juveniles at the Greene County Juvenile Detention Center in Xenia, OH.  The DCS has primary responsibility for meeting the physical, emotional and behavioral needs of the population, while promoting the goals, objectives and mission of the organization.

Normal Working Hours:  Part-time (less than 50 hours per two-week pay period); 1st Shift 7:00am to 3:00pm; 2nd Shift 3:00pm to 11:00pm; 3rd Shift 11:00pm to 7:00am.  Work every other weekend.  Variable shift assignments may be required.  Week-end and holiday shifts required.

 FLSA: Non-Exempt.

 

Duties/Responsibilities

1.    Residential Program Direct Care: Supervise and interact positively with juveniles in assigned activities; direct and supervise the movement of juveniles; provide direct support for volunteers, interns, parents, visitors and service personnel; ensure compliance with program rules, policies and procedures; carry out daily assignments; ensure quality and timeliness of program schedule; facilitate extra curricula activity sessions; counsel juvenile during outbursts of emotion/aggression; mediate disputes between juvenile; supervise recreational periods.

2.    Security/Control: Conduct room searches; conduct frisk searches or strip searches pursuant to policy and procedure; ensure safety, health and security standards are upheld; transport juvenile to and from temporary releases; maintain control pursuant to crisis prevention training to protect self, staff and juvenile; operate electronic security system; supervise visitation; screen for contraband; receive and process juvenile into facility.

3.    Personal Hygiene/Health and Cleanliness: Monitor hygiene practices; observe and report illness or injury; assist in self-administration of medications; administer first aid; supervise and assist juvenile in the cleaning.

4.    Records/Reports:   Prepare and maintain records and reports on resident activities, critical incidents, behavior and progress; maintain written logs; ensure accuracy/neatness of documentation. 

Minimum Qualifications

High School degree or GED equivalency; or Associate’s Degree in counseling, social work, sociology, corrections, humanities or related field and/or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience with juvenile and/or juvenile offenders sufficient to perform the job duties as listed above;  satisfactory completion of professional references check; satisfactory completion of criminal background check; satisfactory completion of sexual risk assessment; satisfactory completion of Ohio Attorney General Offender Search; completion of a drug screening.; affirmative duty to report prior and/or current misconduct; confirmation of valid Ohio driver’s license; confirmation of degrees, licenses and/or certificates.

Work Conditions
The Greene County Juvenile Detention Center is a 32-bed secured, locked facility serving Greene County. Juvenile who violate the law and require secure confinement may be placed in this facility pursuant to the order of the Greene County Juvenile Court. The facility provides short term care for juveniles who have been accused or adjudicated pending court hearings or while awaiting transfer to another facility.  All workers are mandated reporters required to report harassment, abuse and/or neglect.  Work is to be conducted, at times, in a fast-paced environment involving deadlines.
